Our founder, Hyrum W. Smith, has often described his ideal binder: It would fit comfortably in his hand, have an open design for quick access to his plans, just enough pockets to stay organized without bulk, and be crafted to the highest standards. We decided to make one just for him—and anyone else with his distinguished taste. The Smith Binder is crafted from hand-selected French leather and finished in an Italian old world process for a gentle touch, beautiful grain detail, and durability. It offers a pen loop, card pockets, secretarial pockets, and organizer pockets in the back, with 0.75” silver rings for a slim, easy-to-carry profile. We think you’ll love it as much as Hyrum does.
Refills that fit this pen/pencil:

- Townsend Pen
can any of the binders be engraved?

Hello. The binders cannot be engraved, but we do sell nameplates that you can have engraved. They are listed here.

The ring size is .75'. With such a small ring size, what would be the ideal way to use this binder in terms of a planner, starter kit and alpha tabs. I know that ideally one should have one binder, however in this case I'm thinking of using a weekly planner, starter kit and a separate Address Book. Let me know your thoughts. It would be nice to know how Hyrum Smith would have used it..

Hello. Here are some links with some great recommendations for how to set up a planner. The number of pages you can fit in your binder depends on your binder's ring size. We designed our binders to fit comfortably in your hand. If you have a daily planner, it would be difficult to carry your entire year of planner pages with you. We recommend that you only carry three months of planner pages in your binder at a time and rotate the pages in as you need them. We also recommend that you keep all of the monthly calendar tabs in your binder for future planning. Store the rest of your planner pages in a storage case and sleeve. Please see the following for additional information:

I think Hyrum would have used the optional 1-page-per month Classic tabs (they were the default in his day), one month of Original daily filler pages, and the starter tabs package (using only those forms relevant) along with the phone address pages behind that tab. For extra notes, a few cutaway pages could be included. That was the original recommendation for setting up a Franklin Planner, and would fit this small ring size.

I would love to see the smaller ring size in an less expensive option. Years ago I had a classic snap binder with smaller rings but I gave it away. Any plans to offer the smaller ring size in another option?

Is this a soft binder? Meaning that the front and back covers are flexible? or they are rigid?
Submitted by tonyliulaw on February 15, 2020
Hello. This is a lightly structured binder. It's not super stiff, but it's not super flexible either.

What grade of leather is used in this binder? Is it full grain leather? Is the interior all leather? Could the rings be easily removed and replaced if they become damaged?
Submitted by Chilliflowers on June 14, 2020
Hello. The leather is described as Italian old world process combined with the highest quality French calf and made with a beautiful yet gentle hand feel. A full aniline finish that allows the transparent viewing of the natural grain as well as a tight fiber structure for durability. It is a full-grain leather. The interior is leather as well. The rings can be removed with an allen wrench.
